Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on 4 April 1972, located in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Jill Scott was raised by her grandmother and mother. Scott is an all-only child. Scott attended The Philadelphia High School for Girls After graduating, she enrolled in Temple University. Scott studied secondary school education as well as working two jobs. The hope was to become an English secondary school teacher. However, her dream was cut short when after three years of study and being an assistant to teachers she dropped out of university. The path she took to her career started as a spoken-word performer, performing her pieces during poetry readings. Then she teamed up together with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. They wrote You Got Me together. The singer performed at an Roots performance. After that, she got collaborations which included Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She also gained experiences on the stage, as she performed in the Canada tour of the Broadway the musical Rent. Also, she was the first signing agent for Hidden Beach Recordings.
